Good morning!
Without realizing it, you've pretty much considered or pondered the same question I had! To be honest with the amount of time I had to dedicate to that exact same possibility, I was able to determine that it was not cost effective for me. In my example, the rental agencies in this particular case U-Haul, once they find out what you're planning on doing, they want a longer term commitment on a rental from you. My exact particular case went as follows; I contacted two different U-Haul companies, with the idea of renting a large cargo van or box truck, I told one company I was going to use it locally to move household items from one house to another, i told the other company i planned on using it to sign up for long distance cargo hauling. The first company gave me a good rate but with a higher charge per mile, whereas the second company gave me a great rate, and a greater cost per mild driven, but they wanted a commitment of one month or more. At the time it would have required something close to $1000 or more to be held for the rental... at the time i did not have it. If you carefully search for the jobs that are offered, and then have a truck reserved in your name, do the simple math; does the rental of the vehicle, the amount of extra insurance you have to carry, the amount they are charging you per mile driven, exceed or not exceed the profit you're going to make? You will also have to consider your costs on the road, for example do you plan on sleeping in your vehicle? I did that for a while and it worked, but even a cheap hotel every other night is still gonna eat into your bottom line!
I hope I haven't bored with details or in any way scared you off from your search, but this is just the cost of doing business, and more importantly, making a profit!
Good luck in your search!
